One endeavor central to the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA's) mandate is capturing the international State of Knowledge (SoK), supporting transfer of knowledge and establishing high level guidance for all peaceful applications of nuclear technologies, including those specific to Radioactive Waste Management (RWM).
Based on Member States experiences, we are developing a comprehensive suite of documents on the technologies and solutions having the potential to addressing RWM needs.
Radioactive waste disposal is likely to evolve iteratively as one or more sites are investigated and repository design is refined. The IAEA recently published technical guidance on the management of site investigations. The document presents an approach ensuring site investigations are based on a clear understanding of data and requirements. It also recently launched a project to develop further guidance reflecting good practices for establishing site selection criteria.
